The Lovers Tarot Card

The Lovers Tarot Card

Major Arcana  –  Card No.6
Sun sign  –  Gemini
Planet  –  Mercury
Element  –  Air
The Twins, Lovers
The Hebrew Letter  –  Zayin

The Lovers Tarot card depicts a naked man and woman looking longingly at each other and getting blessed by Archangel Raphael.

The backdrop is brimming with several objects – behind the man is the Tree of flames or the Tree of Life – the tree bears twelve flames which represent the twelve zodiac signs. This tree stands for life and holds the entire kaleidoscope of creation in it.

Behind the woman is the Tree of knowledge of what is right and wrong or what is good and evil. Around this tree is curled a snake which denotes desire and temptation.

In the centre is a volcanic mountain which is a masculine, phallic symbol and  is covered by a blue sky which symbolizes the feminine energy. The man and woman have paused and are still – and are looking intently at each other-  the surrounding symbols hold promises of connection at different levels. The two individuals in this card have to make a  life choice  which depends upon the extent , depth, intensity and sincerity of their feelings. The decision that they finally take would pave the way for a joining, a coming together – leading to a union which would redefine their life forever.

The volcano is latent and still just as the man in the picture is still – however he is ready to erupt and explode( like the volcano) with full masculine force provided the two figures decide to join in a passionate, sexual union. The two figures are naked and therefore in their most vulnerable form as they have chosen to reveal their true feelings to one another and are set to pour their hearts out to each other with intimate abandon. They definitely are on the edge / verge of striking a very intimate bond.

The desire to go for a sexual union is definitely very strong as is hinted by the serpent on the tree of knowledge. However, the two have reached here after being indoctrinated by “the Hierophant”( Card no. 5) and have imbibed a set of values, passed on to them by their society, culture, religion, upbringing etc. and now they have reached that point in life where they have to carve their own values( which would dictate their decisions and actions)and based on that make a bold choice which would transform their life.

The card holds promises of love at different levels- sexual love, emotional love and spiritual/ divine love. However, as all these decisions have to be taken by the mind first so notably the element ruling this card is Air and the planet governing it is Mercury. Mercury and Air hint at intense and deep communication – which is essential for entering into a profound/significant relationship.

Archangel Raphael who is seen blessing this union is the angel of Air and healing. Love heals and Raphael holds his blessings for the two in case they enter into a deep bond leading to commitment to each other which can be marriage or an intense romantic relationship based on devotion to each other.

The Lovers are also called Twins and the zodiac sign Gemini also represents Twins – as this card  represents romantic, meaningful relationships which have come into existence as the man and woman have opened their hearts to each other and consciously chosen each other. The man represents a conscious energy and is seen gazing at the woman who carries subconscious energy and is in turn looking at Raphael who represents spiritual energy. So the physical bond can transcend into a deep emotional bond which further intensifies into a deep spiritual union – union of body, mind, heart and soul – the union of man and woman in its purest form.

Therefore the card represents the energy of Twin Flames – complementing and nurturing each other through this absolute union and becoming an inspiration for each other to achieve their highest potential and be of service to humanity as well.

As love heals so the Twin Flames have the power to become the best versions of themselves through the power of mutual love and thereafter the two acquire the capacity to heal others around them.

Love is a potent force that in its purest form brings out the best in individuals. When Twin Flame Union takes place – it is ethereal in its magical harmony and amalgamation and so the Lovers card when combined with Two of Wands in a reading would bear imprint of number 11 as well.

The Lovers card is governed by number 6 which signifies the Star of David and is governed by Venus. Venus being the Goddess of love is tellingly giving blessings of love to persons who draw this card. Venus plants desire and love in the hearts of those who pull this card.

The man and woman depicted in the Lovers card are Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. They represent the primal human instinct and need for each other- the physical urge gradually surpasses the physical plane to touch the heart and soul of each other and as the feminine energy combines with the male counterpart the two  identities are subsumed in a common bond of love. The potent, magical force of love transforms the two and enables them to rise above the limits and confines of the ego to taste the divine nectar of love. As the union progresses they merge and meld into each other as the egos are dissipated and dissolved to make way for a unified self in which love shines in full glory.

The relationship thus formed is harmonious and is based on a conscious, honourable, meaningful choice.

The Lovers card portends relationships and choices. It may mean some decisions about an existing relationship. It can represent a choice of potential partners or a temptation of the heart. Often an aspect of the querent’s life would be sacrificed in order to gain a partner- for instance life as a bachelor/ maiden has to make way for a relationship. So a lifestyle is sacrificed and a relationship is gained.

Else one potential partner is chosen and another is turned down. However, the choice should be made carefully and thoughtfully as it would have a lasting impact on the querent’s life.

The Lovers card reverberates with the force of attraction, the magic of love, the piercing energy of desire – it can lead to a harmonious relationship cemented by trust and faith. True love and trust provide perfect symmetry and balance to the relationship and energizes the  Lovers as they impart strength and confidence to each other and thereby empower each other.

However, such perfection can be attained only in honest, balanced, genuine relationships which do not remain confined to the realm of flesh and sensuality. If a relationship is based solely on lust and passion then it would die a natural death and may leave the man and woman feeling vacuous, hollow and sapped out from within.

The serpent of Temptation of the Garden of Eden becomes self limiting /empty desire if the physical consummation of the union doesn’t lead to an honourable and meaningful bond based on mutual trust and care.

The challenge posed before the couple is to move beyond the sensual realm towards the spiritual realm to taste the nectar of divinity by becoming the guiding force for each other and become the rightful claimants of the blessings of Archangel Raphael.
